There are two qualified Guidance Counsellors in in our school (Ms. McKeon & Ms. Canavan). Much of the work that they do with First Years is around the transition from primary school to secondary school. This can be an easy transition for some but there are always a number of students who find the first few weeks/months of secondary school a challenging time. We are very much aware of this and we do keep a special eye on the incoming first years to ensure they get all help they need.
The Guidance Counsellors have a caring and supportive role in school where students can obtain advice and support about a range of issues such as challenging relationships both inside and outside school, study skills and advice on subject choices and levels, college advice and information on how best to research all the options that are available.
The Guidance Counsellors are available to meet students in a confidential environment where the student is listened to in a non-judgemental way and supported in exploring their thoughts and feelings and the choices that are open to them. There are limits to the confidentiality offered. As students move on to senior cycle they spend a lot of time researching options and opportunities available to them after school.
